Celine with and without the accent: reading the 2018 logo and checking a used Luggage, Belt, Triomphe or Classic Box

What the Céline accent means since 2018, why the date code repeats, and what guides check on a used Luggage, Belt, Triomphe or Classic Box.

The Céline accent proves nothing on its own, and neither does the date code, because it repeats across bags from the same batch. What you can do with a listing is confirm that the logo fits the era the seller claims, that the stamp and the code tab have the shape the guides describe, and that the hardware on a Luggage, a Belt or a Triomphe looks the way they describe it. The rest is decided by a physical examination by a named third party.

The house’s website could not be read, so nothing below is a statement by Celine. It comes from authenticators, resellers and design press.

With the accent and without it

In early September 2018, according to Designboom, the house announced its new logo on Instagram and deleted the posts from the Phoebe Philo era. The accent on the first “e” disappeared and the spacing between the letters was tightened. i-D describes the loss of the accent as the most noticeable change, and W Magazine recalls that Hedi Slimane had been named Philo’s successor in January of that year. Sources give 2, 3 and 4 September, so settle for “early September”.

LegitGrails sums up the dating rule. The logo carried the accent until September 2018. The RealReal adds the exception that matters in pre-owned. Some Philo designs made after the change came out without the accent. So an accent tells you the piece is earlier, but a missing accent does not tell you it is a Slimane design. And no guide we read says a later piece with an accent is fake, so do not use it to rule one out.

The stamp, outside and in

For a Philo-era Luggage, The RealReal describes the exterior logo with the accent over the first “e” and “Paris” printed beneath, in lettering that looks neither thick and blurry nor thin and faint. Inside, the label carries “Made In Italy” in capitals to the right, with one exception on the Nano, where only the M and the I are capitalised. Fashionica describes the interior stamp as “CELINE PARIS” after 2018 and “Céline PARIS” before, with “MADE IN ITALY”, or “MADE IN FRANCE” on certain styles, below. On the font of that line the guides contradict each other.

The date code

According to The RealReal, the code is made of one letter, two letters and four numbers, sits on a leather tab or is embossed into the lining, and the tab’s corners are cut at right angles, never curved. LegitGrails places the tab sewn into the seam near the rear pocket. LegitApp warns that older codes may not follow the format and can be inconsistent.

What each letter or digit means is not settled. The guides give three incompatible readings. What they do agree on is what matters. The RealReal says the numbers are not unique and repeat. One reseller, Glampot, explains it. Bags from the same batch carry the same code, so a code that matches another bag online proves nothing. Yoogi’s Closet says it is very hard to judge a bag from the code alone. And Fashionica adds that the house does not issue numbered cards that cross-match it.

Luggage

Rebag dates it to 2010, although one of its own headings says 2009, and describes two hardware options, aged gold and aged silver. Yoogi’s Closet recognises it by its winged sides and structure, and LegitGrails by its boat-like shape with sides that fold in. On how many sizes exist, the sources do not agree.

The RealReal gives the tells for a Philo-era Luggage. In smooth calfskin, the lining is matching leather. In drummed calfskin, the lining was microsuede until 2013 and natural unfinished hide after that. The zips are unbranded, with plain backs and no engraving, and their finish is antiqued, never bright brass. Ask for a photo of the back of the zip pull and one of the lining.

Belt

Rebag places it in Spring 2015. LegitGrails, the only authenticator that describes it, lists the sizes Pico, Nano, Micro and Mini, describes the hardware as gold-plated metal and the buckle as rectangular, against a narrower, almost square buckle on the copy. It is a single source, so treat it as a description.

Triomphe

Here two guides agree on the clasp. According to Libas Collective, the Triomphe clasp is heavy, with a clean hinge and precise engraving. Fashionica describes it as hefty, with perfectly mirrored symmetry and the word “PARIS” engraved crisp and legible. Libas adds that the interior label of the Triomphe reads CELINE PARIS and includes a serial. A small blog, Alice Elizabeth Luxury, describes on the Triomphe Classique the CELINE PARIS engraving on both square strap rings and the code tab in the inside pocket without a zip. One minor source, so use it to ask, not to rule out.

Classic Box

On the Classic Box we found little. Fashion Fox describes the swing clasp as its only decorative element and says collectors look for intact gold hardware, because oxidation lowers the value, and the original dust bag. On the launch year the sources do not agree, so do not use it to rule a bag out. Apply the general checks. Logo consistent with the era and a code tab with square corners.

The paperwork

On the authenticity card, the sources contradict each other. Fashionica and Glampot say Celine does not issue one, and Glampot describes a new bag coming with a care booklet and a card listing the model and colour, nothing more. Another reseller claims the opposite. HULA warns that counterfeiters copy the cards. With that picture, a card proves nothing in either direction. LegitGrails treats the card, receipt and dust bag as starting points, not proof.

Entrupy opened its Celine authentication in November 2016 and explained that the popularity of the Luggage and the Phantom made it harder because of the quality of the copies. It covers all materials except exotics.

Buyer traps, replica vocabulary and which documents prove anything in general are covered in how to buy pre-owned luxury without getting scammed, replica AAA, mirror quality and clone and which documents prove a luxury bag is genuine.

What this means for the Celine pieces at Kove

Kove does not issue its own verdicts and has no laboratory. Some pieces carry a report from an outside laboratory, in the laboratory’s name, and the piece’s page says so when one exists. If you want one on a specific piece, it is arranged with that laboratory and you receive the result exactly as issued, which can confirm the piece or fail to confirm it. The details are on Authenticity. The Celine pieces in the catalogue are at /en/bags/celine/.

Checklist for a real listing

  1. Logo against date. No accent on a piece sold as 2015, ask. An accent on one from after 2018, ask, do not rule it out.
  2. Stamp. Thick and blurry letters, or thin and faint ones, rule it out.
  3. Code tab. Curved corners, rule it out. A code that “matches” another one online proves nothing.
  4. Luggage. A branded back on the zip, or bright brassy hardware, rule it out.
  5. Triomphe. A light, asymmetrical clasp or a blurry “PARIS”, rule it out.
  6. Belt. An almost square buckle, ask.
  7. The seller offers an “authenticity card” as proof. It is not, in either direction.
  8. Everything above passes. You still do not know. Ask for a report from a named third party before paying.
